about

The son of a truck driver and a music teacher, Garrett Thornton is a singer-songwriter based in south Mississippi. His debut solo release is titled “Salt of the Earth”, a reference to the people and the stories of his birthplace. Having a very rural setting, the characters in these stories are very connected to the land and the things it provides, or in some cases, does not provide. That theme reverberates through the entire album. It serves as a backdrop for stories of loneliness, love, drunken mischief, and fate. The album was recorded at his home during the winter months of 2010-2011 with two microphones and is stylistically a folk album. The instrumentation of the album is predominately acoustic and the tone sincere. It is a collection of short, understated songs intended to draw their emotional impact from their simplicity.
