about

To explain to you where the inspiration for "Rebel Heart" came from I must start with some info about myself. I am a songwriter. If I must describe myself in more detail I am an independent, American songwriter. I don't know if there is ever a time in which I completely disconnect from whatever instincts drive me to create music. The creative aspect of music is the aspect which I am interested in and the one in which I feel comfortable. In contrast, I am not very interested in, nor am I very good at, repeatedly hashing out old tunes. I say all of that in an effort to explain the way in which I am always writing new tunes and always working on them in the context of an album. In the year and a half or so after I released "Salt of the Earth" as I was playing live I worked out the framework of a couple of albums that I felt lacked and didn't work. When I started to realize this I began to slow down on booking live shows and I started over. As I worked through new tunes I began to see connections in the characters of the songs I was writing. Many of the characters from the songs were on the fringes of what I consider mainstream society. They were outsiders or rebels. I caution you that these are not the over-glamourized cliche' "rebels" that seem to saturate pop-culture but people who's actions and decisions truly separate them from others. Many times from those who they care about the most. There are two stories about addicts. One song looks at a character falling into addiction and one song focusses on a character trying to dig himself out of addiction. There is a story about a character living on the road and wondering if all the roads he's traveling will eventually lead him back to the people and places he first left. There are several other stories and perspectives but almost all of them feature these fringe characters. I tried not to over-romanticize these characters because I wanted the songs to reflect how the decisions we make throughout our lives stack on top of one another and, sometimes, begin to predetermine future actions and decisions. I think the main thing that clicked for me was that I identified with the characters but, to be honest, I try not to think about that too much. Mostly, my hope is that these songs resonate for you as much as they do for me.

Thanks,

Garrett

The son of a truck driver and a music teacher, Garrett Thornton is a singer-songwriter based in south Mississippi. His debut solo release is titled “Salt of the Earth”, a reference to the people and the stories of his birthplace. Having a very rural setting, the characters in these stories are very connected to the land and the things it provides, or in some cases, does not provide. ... more
